Motivation has a half-life

Two honest data points on founder fuel: velocity collapsed the week after the self-imposed deadline expired, and Zenota got built faster than Divo because its builder was learning something new the whole time.

// trace: where this idea came from

Buried in the launch retrospective, two measurements of the fuel system, offered against interest.

First: the deadline effect has an expiry date. The self-imposed limit for finding revenue ran out after Divo’s first two weeks of development, and Juan reports the mechanics plainly: “después de las primeras dos semanas, ahí como que la motivación bajó bastante, honestamente. Entonces ahí como que yo me demoraba más haciendo las cositas” ▸ 23:20. The deadline whose arrival entry 58-2 recorded did its job while it was alive, and then its corpse sat on the schedule: the final week ran on momentum and obligation, visibly slower. A deadline is a battery, not a generator; once it discharges, it powers nothing, and pretending it still counts just adds guilt to the drag.

Second: learning is throughput. Comparing his two launches, “este Divo siento que me demoré un poquito más comparado con Zenota… es que en Zenota yo estaba mucho más animado, honestamente. Y segundo, estaba aprendiendo, estaba aprendiendo bastante” ▸ 42:35. Divo’s stack held no novelty; the excitement had to come from the product alone, and some days it didn’t.

el plazo es batería, no generador →

Neither observation comes with a solution, but both come with implicit engineering: if deadlines decay, renew them, the way the launch itself became the next one; if learning is fuel, budget some novelty into even the routine project. The compensating asset appears one breath later: Stripe, Google verification, payment flows, all mastered now, “para futuros proyectos… yo puedo hacer algo por mí sola”, as Julia puts it ▸ 43:23. The motivation was spent, but it was spent buying capability, and capability doesn’t decay…
