The mother is the salesperson

Where two developers were turned away at the door, a mother walks in. After the failed Bogotá trip to reach blind users for Koby, Julia's mother, who has been dabbling in her own small ventures and frequents community centers, offers to go in person to an institute for the blind in her city. She goes, buzzes the intercom, and though the place is closed for remodeling, a man named Jean comes down to the street, watches a comic being read aloud on her phone, and films the screen to send to the coordinator who makes the decisions. She is, for now, the team's salesperson, punteando for the Balón de Oro. The lesson is one Juan states flatly: this kind of personal, in-person, charismatic contact is what wins people. A cold email is too cold.

// trace: where this idea came from

A week after two developers couldn’t get past a guarded lobby, a mother walked in. Julia’s mother has been dabbling in her own small ventures lately, partly to stay busy, partly for her own sense of purpose, and she frequents the kind of community and institutional centers that have meeting spaces. So when Julia mentioned what they were doing, and sent her the Koby demo, her mother simply offered: if you want, I’ll go, I’ll go there and talk to them ▸ 11:57.

She went by bus to the institute, a big one, and buzzed the intercom. It was closed, mid-remodel, and at first no one answered. But after a while a man picked up, and rather than turn her away through a speaker, he came down. His name was Jean. Out on the street, because she couldn’t come inside, she put a comic on her phone and had him watch it read aloud ▸ 16:43. He took his own phone, filmed the app running on hers, and said he’d send it to the coordinator, the one who makes decisions about this, because it looked interesting: it could make blind people more independent.

un correo es muy frío; la mamá es carismática →

It is, Juan laughs, incredible that her mother is closer than they are. For now she’s their salesperson, punteando, keeping possession, running it up toward the Balón de Oro. And the lesson underneath the joke is one he states plainly: this kind of contact, personal, in person, is what actually wins people over. An email is too cold. His mother-in-law is charismatic, she’s standing right there, and a screen watched over someone’s shoulder on a sidewalk carries a warmth that fifty-three cold emails to strangers never will. The institutional door that read as a firewall to two engineers opened for one warm person who simply showed up…
