AI is autotune

Pirry opened his talk with a video of an orca with a hole near its head gushing milk while a calf tried to drink from the wrong place, and Juan believed it, because it sat right at the edge of what he actually knows about whales. Then it was revealed as generated, and the discomfort became the talk's subject. Juan's own framing is cleaner than the outrage: AI is like autotune. When autotune arrived everyone hated it on the grounds that people without talent shouldn't be singing, but what it actually did was let people who can't sing make music. The problem was never the tool; it was someone using autotune to pass themselves off as a singer. Same with AI. The problem is not that it generates, it's someone making something false look real.

Pirry, the documentarian, opened his talk with a video: an orca with a hole near its head gushing milk, and a calf trying to drink, except putting its mouth in the wrong place so the milk simply dispersed into the water. Juan watched it and believed it ▸ 56:47. Not because he’s credulous, but because of exactly where the lie was placed, and he articulates that precisely: it sits right at the edge of the general knowledge a person has ▸ 57:14. Orcas are mammals, they do nurse, and you have never personally watched one do it, so it must be like that, while some quieter part of you registers that something is off. Then it’s revealed as generated, and the whole room has learned something about itself.

Pirry’s own position was anger at AI for disinforming, which Juan shares. But the framing he offers instead of outrage is the reason this is an entry, and it’s a better tool than the anger.

el problema nunca fue el autotune; fue hacerse pasar por cantante →

AI, he says, is like autotune ▸ 58:34. When autotune arrived, everyone hated it, and the objection had a specific moral shape: you don’t have talent, so what are you doing here, people who can’t sing shouldn’t sing. What autotune actually did was give people who can’t sing the ability to make music, which is a gift, not a crime. The tool was never the problem.

The problem with autotune, he says, arrives at one precise moment: when someone uses it to pass themselves off as a person who genuinely knows how to sing ▸ 58:59. The deceit, not the assistance. And it is the same with AI: the problem is not that it generates things, it is someone making something false appear to be real. An orca that never existed, presented as footage.

What makes the distinction load-bearing rather than clever is that it cuts through the argument he’s actually living inside. He builds with these tools daily; a blanket condemnation would indict his whole practice, and a blanket defense would make him complicit in the orca. The autotune line lets him keep both: use the tool openly to do things you couldn’t do alone, which is what Koby is built on, and refuse the one move that poisons it, dressing the synthetic up as the real…
