Excel was built for humans

Why Copilot flails in spreadsheets, and why the fix is not a better AI but a spreadsheet designed for one. The Vibe Cell thesis, on the record.

Vibe Cell, the parked “improved Excel” project from the diary’s first week, finally got its full argument on camera, and the argument is better than the pitch ever was.

Excel is one of the most powerful tools alive, used in every market, and essentially unchanged since it shipped ▸ 26:50. Microsoft bolted Copilot onto it and it underwhelms, it gets lost. The diagnosis: that is not a model problem, it is a substrate problem. Excel was created for humans ▸ 27:16, for eyes that scan a grid, and everything that makes it ergonomic for eyes makes it hostile to a language model: formulas repeated across hundreds of columns that the AI samples instead of reads ▸ 27:39, context windows that are large but finite, you cannot feed it 50,000 cells one by one ▸ 28:03, and the little side tables humans park anywhere, invisible to a model unless someone declares them ▸ 28:21.

no es que la IA sea tonta, es que la hoja miente →

The design principle for the replacement has a name, learned mid-sentence on camera: what you see is what you get. Excel’s one great virtue is that clicking a cell shows the exact formula that executes, nothing hidden behind the button, unlike a Python script ▸ 28:55. Vibe Cell keeps that transparency and rebuilds the data layer so an AI can actually hold it: Excel-simple on the surface, machine-legible underneath ▸ 29:26.

The test case is autobiographical: a financial simulation from a class this year, days of manual cell-work that would be minutes of code, except the professor can’t audit code ▸ 29:35. “Make me a financial simulation, add this, change that”, done in half an hour, and still inspectable by a human who only reads spreadsheets. Called on camera one of the most potent ideas in the portfolio, and also, honestly, complicadito ▸ 30:14
