Looking for the way out

The tryhard cousins spent four years climbing sport's S-curve until the gains got tiny and expensive, and a forced twenty-day trip to Europe became the detox that showed them the bill: money, parties, presence, all traded for podiums that paid in ego. Now they run the process in reverse. Most people hunt motivation to get in; they're hunting the way out.

// trace: where this idea came from

The cousins are the ones whose feeds are all podiums, cycling, marathons, trekking, top tens and the occasional first place, four years of dándole durísimo ▸ 8:54. He frames their arc as the S-curve every skill follows ▸ 9:07: brutal start, then a stretch that feels exponential, then the bend where improvements shrink and their price explodes ▸ 9:43. Past the bend, progress is bought with pure optimization, zero alcohol, supplement stacks, better shoes ▸ 9:59, each buying almost nothing.

The reveal came sideways. A twenty-day family trip to Europe threatened his physique and his rhythm, and the cousin didn’t want to go ▸ 10:41; the diagnosis is his own: “ya se vuelve un vicio, ya se vuelve como una esclavitud” ▸ 11:07. His wife settled it, I’m going with or without you ▸ 11:21, and the trip became an accidental detox. Back home, the desire to compete simply wasn’t there, and with the dopamine quiet they could finally count what the podiums had cost, money spent, life skipped, and no real prize money, “eso es más como por el ego de uno” ▸ 12:07.

la cima cobra en lo que no se ve →

So now they climb down on purpose: selling the racing bikes ▸ 13:09, rebuilding a routine where exercise serves health instead of records ▸ 13:27. The inversion delights him: “la mayoría de gente está buscando motivación para entrar; ellos están buscando la forma de salir”, desmotivación as a discipline ▸ 14:26. It’s the elite athlete’s coin flipped over, all the sacrifice the highlight reel hides ▸ 15:05. The healthy relationship to the curve walks beside them on the same mountain: the PhD cousin who runs not to win but to drain the stress of deadlines ▸ 17:31, the same job the gym does for a founder whose bets aren’t landing ▸ 18:04
