// trace: where this idea came from

We finished Black Mirror’s season, and one episode wouldn’t leave us alone: a woman survives a stroke via a brain implant, subscription-based. Then the plan she’s on stops being premium: ads injected into her perception, coverage zones, tier upgrades, until her husband is doing degradation-for-cash challenges to afford her consciousness ▸ 31:17. Dystopian only in degree: the pricing playbook is the one every service already runs.

The real-world versions, from this week

My parents’ property tax doubled in one year ▸ 34:26. YouTube pre-rolls grew from five skippable seconds to unskippable minutes ▸ 36:20. Rents push workers ever farther from the jobs, converting a thirty-minute commute into three hours ▸ 37:29. Different industries, same move: the service stays “available,” but the friction around it grows, and you pay the growth in hours.

Everyone gets the same 24 hours; the tax decides how many you keep ▸ 38:02.

The mechanism underneath is seed 4-1 grown up: systems chase the objective they’re given, and when the objective is extraction, the optimizer discovers that your time is the softest asset to take. Which sharpens what we’re building toward: owning the means, the tools, the list, the archive, is largely about becoming harder to tax…
