Seven thousand swipes, zero

A Reddit Sankey diagram condenses a man's dating years: 7,000 swipes, 40 chats, 10 meetings, a couple of dates, zero relationships. The teardown blames infinite options for manufactured inconformity, shows how the visual filter is secretly a wealth filter, and fakes the pyramids live to prove it.

The exhibit is a Sankey diagram someone posted of their own dating funnel: about 7,000 swipes across three or four apps, one of them on a paid tier, narrowing to some 40 chats, 10 people met, a date or two, and zero relationships ▸ 29:55. Against it he sets the village baseline: a town where you’ll ever see 200 people, talk to 50, and choose from a handful, limited options making the choice not worse but possible ▸ 30:55. Infinite catalog produces the opposite: “se vuelve una sociedad muy inconforme”, every current option shadowed by a hypothetically better one ▸ 32:51.

The sharper claim is what the swipe filter actually measures. It presents as looks, but a better camera takes better photos, so it’s partly a purchasing-power filter ▸ 34:27, the Eiffel Tower photo beating the Laguna de Tota ▸ 34:46. And then the demo that ends the argument: they screenshot themselves mid-video, hand it to the image model, and put the pyramids of Giza behind them, live, “ahí estamos perfectos en las pirámides de Egipto” ▸ 35:13. The signal the filter trusts costs nothing to counterfeit ▸ 37:07.

The prescriptions come with receipts. Meet through the thing you love, because that’s the filter that can’t be faked: they met on Tandem, a language-exchange app ▸ 39:31. Prefer venues where the visual layer is removed entirely, like Slowly’s avatar-only pen-pal letters ▸ 38:08. Retire perfection as a spec, “nadie en este mundo es perfecto, así lo aparenten” ▸ 40:29. And set a stop-loss on the strategy itself: six months of nothing means uninstall and rethink, not a Pro subscription ▸ 41:12, which anyway broadcasts exactly the wrong signal ▸ 41:26. Seven thousand swipes is not a dating history; it’s a systems failure, and you don’t fix a systems failure by swiping harder…
