Julia writes her own scanner

Julia opens her own build thread: a barcode scanner that grades what's actually in the food, additives, ultra-processing, vegan flags, modeled on Brazil's Desrotulando and Europe's Yuka, for the continent that doesn't have one. The stated goal isn't the app; it's independence.

The product she wants exists elsewhere and not here. In Brazil she used Desrotulando: scan a barcode and get the verdict, how many additives, how ultra-processed, the sugar, whether it’s vegan-safe or lactose-hostile, a grade instead of a label ▸ 14:47. Her case for it is ergonomic: the honest information is printed in letters you can barely find, let alone read ▸ 15:23, and the good version even recommends a better-scored product at a similar price ▸ 15:51. Europe and the US have their equivalent, the one they recall as Yuka, named, in the founding story they retell, for a cofounder’s wife from Yucatán ▸ 16:02. Colombia and the region have nothing like it, which makes it exactly the kind of gap worth a prototype ▸ 17:08.

The declared purpose is bigger than the app. This is Julia’s practice project, stated as three goals: sharpen her programming, become independent, and be able to realize her own ideas ▸ 16:57, starting with learning how agents work ▸ 17:39.

el proyecto de práctica correcto es uno que ya quisieras que existiera →

The pedagogy on camera is its own scene. She drafted the input-output spec; he “clarified” it into his own list; she names the move with a borrowed word, “me parece un mainsplaining” ▸ 18:05. Under the bickering, the two technical notes that survive are real: on the output side, how do you make an AI’s score consistent across runs, the thing she now has to research in how the incumbents do it; on the input side, parts of the pipeline must be preprocessed before the agent ever sees them, because an agent can’t scan a barcode ▸ 18:45. Two prototypes now run in parallel in the same apartment, his against a Monday deadline, hers against no deadline but her own…
