US-East-1 took the world down

One AWS region fails and half the internet goes with it, banks, McDonald's, Robinhood, Fortnite, Reddit, which surfaces the question under all of it: we outsourced our infrastructure to a single building, and redundancy stopped being paranoia the moment the region blinked.

The outage is global news: Amazon Web Services’ US-East-1 region falls and takes a stunning list with it, Bancolombia and Daviplata, Mastercard, Reddit, Canva, Coinbase, Robinhood, Fortnite, McDonald’s ▸ 23:01. His framing is architectural: AWS is “el backbone, el andamio de muchos servicios en la nube” ▸ 20:56, so its failure isn’t one company’s, it’s the substrate’s.

The dilemma it forces is the entry: “¿será que esta evolución hacia la nube fue lo correcto, o viviremos mejor con servicios locales?” ▸ 21:29, and the threat model he sketches is geopolitical: countless companies, countries, whole economies depending on servers in one place ▸ 23:55, one bombed data center or one cut undersea cable from “mundo en caos” ▸ 24:14. The cultural observation underneath, shared from the group chat: “le hemos comenzado a tener miedo a crear nuestra propia infraestructura” ▸ 24:47, always preferring to outsource because it’s cheaper at the start.

tercerizar es correcto de startup; de gigante, es un punto único de falla →

The resolution is the word he keeps returning to: redundancy ▸ 25:21, part of your operations on AWS, part on Google Cloud, a backup that isn’t in the same building. He’s careful to keep the nuance honest for his own stage: a startup like Tencargo shouldn’t build from scratch, it should lean on others ▸ 24:55; the redundancy imperative arrives with scale, “cuando ya uno es muy grande, McDonald’s de la vida” ▸ 25:05. The Vercel meme he laughs at, “AWS con 500% de marca” ▸ 25:57, is the whole tower in one joke: layers of convenience stacked on a single foundation that just proved it can blink…
